Give them good bows and snake arrows. Be ready to build broken walls back of breached - it's always funny when raiders bust in, then you rebuild the wall behind them and trap them in. If you want to avoid hostile NPC's the pearl cave just east of the northernmost penguin islet is a good pick. There's plenty of space in there to do whatever you want and nothing but resources spawn in there. It is however underwater which is kind of inconvenient. There is a peninsula on the redwoods river at 47,48.

Also, if what you're looking for is a fighter that's good for PvE and PvP, I believe the answer is "Pets suck, use a thrall instead", because pets have garbage armor, so can never really compare to a well equipped thrall. Pets were a good way of quickly building up a defensive force to protect your base for little time / effort.
