Its very much the same. As a rouge you get more defence, utility, and mobility than mage but slightly less dps potential and you give up the survivability that mage has. Rouge will only really shine once you get past moon lord. All classes can be used but mage is what I've found to work the best.

After Golem you can fight against the Lunatic Cultist. Because these vanilla bosses aren't hard you can skip a few Calamity bosses. Then you can come back to them with much stronger Pre/Post-Lunatic Cultist items. If you aren't planning to do this I've writed down which items are the best against bosses that you can skip with this method.
